Christmas Show
Yes, it looks like it’s going to become an institution again. The date is Sunday 19th December 1999, the venue is again The Boardwalk, Snig Hill, Sheffield, admission is £4 tickets, £5 on the door. Tickets are available now from us, cheques to Haze, please enclose SAE.
We’re not expecting Rog Patterson to show this year, instead we’re planning an Old Pekuliar/Acoustic Haze support, leading to the usual Christmas revelry & foolishness.
Acoustic Haze
Is a relatively new project we’re involved in, although the roots go back to the early 80s acoustic sets at the Hallamshire Hotel. Two years ago at the Whitchurch Festival I played a solo acoustic set at the Saturday afternoon session & really enjoyed it. The audience didn't seem to mind too much either, so I repeated it last year with assistance from Paul. Then on the weekend of the 20th anniversary show, we did a World Turtle set on the Saturday afternoon for CRS in Rotherham & included a couple of acoustic songs with Paul Chisnell; then on the Sunday morning played an acoustic set as a 3 piece for the Greenpeace Whale Walk Festival. We repeated the ‘World Turtle plus acoustic set with Chis’ formula for another Greenpeace benefit at Tin Pan Alley in September last year, then; again for Greenpeace, supported Seize The Day at Ranmoor Hall, with Gordon Walker added on violin. In July of this year Acoustic Haze nearly appeared at, guess what, a Greenpeace benefit at Under The Boardwalk, but the lack of a music licence meant that we could only have two people on stage at any time, so were restricted to picking two from the four of us for each song. A surprise booking at the Rising Sun, New Whittington (imagine your living room, well this place is smaller), left us caught a little short for material, so we drafted in Chris Jellis (from Paul Chisnell’s acoustic duo Old Pekuliar), to do a few songs. Chris’s presence on guitar has freed up me & Paul to play other instruments, so the current line-up is:-
- Paul Chisnell - djembe, tambourine, hand drums & vocals
- Chris Jellis - acoustic guitar & vocals
- Chris McMahon - 12 string, bouzouki, balalaika, accordion, bass & vocals
- Paul McMahon - acoustic guitar, mandolin, bass & vocals
- Gordon Walker - violin, mandolin & vocals
The set is an eclectic mix of Haze/World Turtle songs plus folk, rock, pop (& even country) classics, plus (if I get my way) some traditional Russian folk music!
We’re planning more gigs, and possibly even a CD before too long.
Strongheart...
After much talk & little action, we finally made it to the continent in May of this year. The venue was the Borstrock festival, in the sleepy little western Dutch town of Nieuw-Vosseneer. There’s a full report on our
website, but needless to say we had a great time, playing to 1000 Dutch bikers & drinking far too much beer. Let’s hope we’ll be back soon!
...On CD
I've finally got hold of copies of the second Strongheart CD ‘Ritual’, available at gigs or by mail order. The CD was recorded in '96 for Hengest Records & is musically much more adventurous than their first CD ‘Hard Wired’. There’s a great cross section of melodic as well as heavy rock. Check out the
Hengest Website
for some mp3 samples. We’re also starting work on some new material, hopefully for CD release early next year.
Von Daniken
The first pressing of the new CD ‘Transient’ has now sold out but we should have more in stock by the time you read this. There is also a bonus track called ‘Best Kept Secret’ available as an mp3 from
Warren's Von Daniken Page. The lyrics are also on the net at the same address. If you want a copy & haven’t got net access, send me a large SAE & I’ll post them to you. Like the 20th anniversary CD 2 ‘Transient’ is recorded on CD-R, so should be afforded the extra respect the format demands, i.e. don’t drop it, write on it or expose it to direct sunlight.
It is recorded on top quality HHB gold disks so should behave as a ‘normal’ CD, but if you have any problems, we are happy to replace defective CDs.
Cellar Replayed
Will be out on Cyclops Records in the New Year, as a limited edition Club Cyclops release with new full colour sleeve designed by Jilaen Sherwood. Track listing is everything from ‘Cellar Replay’, plus ‘The Exiles Song’ ‘In Gods Hands’ & ‘Seven Stones’ from ‘The Cellar Tapes’ plus anything live we can fit on. Advance orders are £12, to the usual address.
